AAU It Services

VPN installation and use

Through a secure (encrypted) connection, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables you to gain access to Aalborg University’s systems from your own home or from anywhere else in the world.

Before you can use VPN you have to register at mfa.aau.dk.

  • You have to do this registration while you are connected to the AAU's network.
  • You have to do it BEFORE the installation of VPN.

You can always gain access to your webmail without using VPN, however, VPN enables you to access files and other services which are usually only accessible on AAU’s network.

Services that can only be accessed from AAU’s network and therefore require you to be logged in via VPN

  • Windows fileshares (e.g. group folder or personal folder)
  • InfoGlue CMS backend (editing of websites)
  • Administrative systems:
    • Inteum (patent database)
    • Workzone (including access to KMD)
    • STADS (not STADS self-service)
    • Sickness absence system
    • adramatch (budget/accounting control system)
    • Qlikview
    • ØSS
  • Terminal access to Linux server, alternatively you can use sshgw.aau.dk as jumphost instead of VPN
  • Web servers and database servers for researchers and students that are used for internal matters
  • Software that requires a license through license server (for example Solidworks and Ansys)

VPN and 2-factor authentication

VPN uses 2-factor authentication

  • The first factor is your AAU username and password,
  • The second factor you choose on mfa.aau.dk, where you logon with your AAU email address and password

Read more about 2-factor authentication and how to set it up here.

If your AAU computer uses the standard installation, the VPN client is already installed and you do not need to install it yourself.

If you need to install VPN on a computer, follow these steps:

The installation is almost automatic and you will probably be able to complete the installation without referring to our guides. However, you will find a step-by-step guide in the right hand menu.

Once you have installed VPN on your computer, you no longer need to access the network via the website; instead, you can gain access through the shortcut to Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

Start Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client by clicking at the Windows Start Button in the lower left hand corner. Find it in the menu or start typing the name cisco.
