How to install and run a Windows program on a Macbook/macOS

If you need to install Windows software on your Mac, you can use one of the following options:

Remote desktop from Mac to Windows

If you’re using a MacBook or iMac and need to access the administrative programs used at Aalborg University which are only available for Windows, you must install Microsoft Remote Desktop and create a link for your Windows remote desktop.
You’ll find a guide in the right-hand menu under Remote desktop from Mac to Windows

Boot Camp

When using Boot Camp, you can choose to start up your Mac in either MacOS or Windows 10 operating systems.

This allows both systems to benefit fully from your Macbook’s resources without having to share them with another system.

Using Boot Camp only requires 4GB RAM.

The following Mac models support Windows 10 when installed using Boot Camp:

  • MacBook Pro (2012 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2012 and later)
  • MacBook (2015 and later)

You need at least 50GB of free disk space on your hard drive.

You’ll find more information on how to install Boot Camp in the right-hand menu.

VMware Fusion for Mac

VMware Fusion is a program that installs a virtual machine on your Mac; the program allows you to run MacOS and Windows 10 together at the same time. This means that MacOS and Windows 10 must share your Macbook’s resources.

Your Macbook should have at least 8GB RAM.

You’ll find more information on how to install Boot Camp in the right-hand menu.
