Add a Panopto block in a Moodle course (Teacher)

In order for your Moodle course to show your Panopto videos, you must add the Panopto block to your course. (Remember that you must have the “teacher” role in the course).

Refer to these instructions on how to add a block in Moodle

The first time you add the block to a course, you will have to prepare the course.

Click “Provision Course” in the Panopto block:

If you do not have the option to click on Provision Course, this has already been done and Panopto is ready to use.

The Panopto block will look like this:

    Creating the course folder (Teacher)

If you are teacher in a Moodle course, click the Panopto icon or “Course settings” in the Panopto block, and a folder with the same name as the course will automatically be created in Panopto.

You are the Creator and Publisher of the folder, and the students are Viewers. All the videos that you place in this folder can be viewed by the students, but students cannot add anything to it.

The access rights are defined automatically. Conversely, recordings that you keep in “Min Mappe” (My Folder) are private and cannot be viewed by the students, even if you link to them.

A video in Panopto will automatically be hidden if it is not viewed for two years, and will be deleted if not viewed after three years.

If relevant, continue to “Rights for the course folder” otherwise continue to “Add a Panopto video to your moodle course”.

Rights for course folders in Panopto (Teacher)

If you as a teacher in a Moodle course, have clicked the Panopto icon or “Course settings” in the Panopto block, a folder with the same name as the course will automatically be created in Panopto.

You are the Creator and Publisher of the folder, and the students are Viewers. All the videos that you place in this folder can be viewed by the students, but students cannot add anything to it. A video in Panopto will automatically be hidden if it is not viewed for two years, and will be deleted if not viewed after three years.

The three roles that can be assigned for the course folder in Panopto are:

    • Creator (if your role was Teacher or Non-editing Teacher in the Moodle course)
    • Publisher (if your role was Teacher or Manager in the Moodle course)
    • Viewer (students)

When you click “Course settings” in your Panopto block, you will be taken to Panopto.

If you are already in Panopto, click the gear icon at the top right and click Indstillinger (Settings), as shown below.

Here you can change the settings for the Panopto folder to correspond with the Moodle course.

If you want to prevent others from downloading videos from your course, this can be done under “Downloads” by selecting “Ingen” (None).

If you want students to be able to e.g. send a Panopto video in a post or attach it as an assignment in your Moodle course, a special subfolder must be created in Panopto. Click “Oversigt” (Overview) in the left-hand menu.

Click “Opret opgavemappe” (Create assignment folder), and a subfolder with the same name followed by the suffix “opgaver” will be created.

All students on the course will have access to this folder, and they will also be able to see it if they log in directly to Panopto. When students upload files to this Panopto folder, they can attach them from the Moodle course and other students will be able to view them immediately — unlike if they attach files from “Min Mappe” (My Folder).

If the students log in to Panopto directly (aau.panopto.nordu.net), they will only see their own videos in the [opgaver] assignment folder, even if other students have placed things in the folder.

Be aware that if you want the students to be able to attach Panopto files to an assignment in Moodle, you must click on “online-text” under assignment type in the hand-in settings in Moodle.

Add a panopto video to your Moodle course

A Panopto video can be added to any element where you have the option to add a description, e.g. in a forum post. (Remember that the Panopto block must be added to the course and the course folder must have been created.)

    1. Log in to Moodle and enter your course.
    2. Add an activity, e.g. a label, as usual.
    3. Click the Panopto icon in the bar with editing tools.
    4. Click “Vælg”(Choose) if you want to use a video you already have in your Panopto course folder. Remember to select the folder that is associated with your course.

To add the video to your course click at it and choose "Insert" at the button of the window.

If you have a list of videos in the course, you must first select a specific one before the "Insert" button appears.

    5. Click “Upload” if you have a video that you want to use on your computer.

Drag a video or audio file over, or click to find the file on your computer.

    6. Click “Optag”(Record) to record a video on the screen.

See under the "general use of Panopto" how to record in general or how to record only yourself, only your desktop or a presentation with PowerPoint or Keynote.
